Behind closed doors
Exactly what goes on inside an artist's studio?

When I asked fellow Maze artists to reveal what was in their studio right now it was a thrilling peek into their private worlds. So much work never sees the light of day - maybe it's just an experiment, a 'failure', work in progress or simply daily practice confined to sketch books and cupboards.
What they gave me was ceramics, inks, bold sculptures, abstract sketches, collage and a whole lovely range of raw ideas and skill development. To me these pieces are more real and precious than some of our finished artworks - unaffected by the prospect of public airing or competitive scrutiny. Just art for itself, for ourselves, for pleasure and discovery. It was a delight to see some incredible works in progress, alongside my 'ugly' stuff - my favourite because often there's a little bit of brilliance hidden in there, ready to be used again in a slightly less experimental creation.
SO what's behind your studio door? Show us some ugly stuff!
