Layering it on.
Gesso experimentation.

Hannah offered us tea during our gesso workshop, but when I saw what was bubbling on the stove I had second thoughts. Warm rabbit skin glue (vegan options are available) was on the menu - our gesso in preparation. What a great session - layering up this ever-thickening and whitening liquid into the perfect substrate for creating texture. We raided the garden for foliage and flowers, pressing it into the layers and forming a surface of contours and shapes. And when finally dry, we experimented with colour - inks, watercolours - whatever we had to hand. The result is a headful of ideas of how to incorporate this organic and textural technique into our work.
